The Importance and Safety of X-Rays in Dentistry

X-rays are an essential tool in the field of dentistry. They allow dentists to see what isn’t visible to the naked eye, such as areas between the teeth, inside the teeth, below the gums, and into the bone. This is crucial for the diagnosis and treatment of dental problems before they become more serious.

At Boulevard Dental, your safety is our top priority. The American Dental Association (ADA), the U.S Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the American Academy of Oral and Maxilliofacial Radiology, and many other medical experts have determined that modern, dental digital x-ray equipment significantly reduces a patient’s exposure to radiation. They have also concluded that lead aprons and thyroid shields provide no added benefit when using digital x-ray equipment. Instead, they recommend discontinuing their use as these may decrease the quality of the x-ray, which could lead to the need for further x-rays. At Boulevard Dental, we are fortunate to have the latest in modern dental x-ray technology in order to offer our patients the lowest possible radiation exposure with the best diagnostic results. Upon the recent recommendation of the ADA, and after examining the evidence ourselves, we have discontinued the use of lead aprons and thyroid shields.

We hope this explanation of the importance and safety of x-rays alleviates any concerns that you may have. You can be assured that we at Boulevard Dental Associates will continue to make your safety our priority!
