Choosing the right dental insurance can be overwhelming! To help you navigate the process, here are a few key points that Traci, our office facilitator, recommends to keep in mind:
Check for In-Network and Out-of-Network Coverage:
Look for dental insurance with in-network and out-of-network coverage. This will allow for greater flexibility with treatment and will provide the greatest opportunity for coverage.
Avoid Waiting Periods:
Many plans only cover routine cleanings, exams, and initial X-rays, requiring you to wait several months before covering major work. Look for a plan with no waiting periods to increase the likelihood that you will be protected in the case of dental emergencies or unexpected dental issues that may arise.
Look for a High Annual Maximum:
Most plans have a “cap” on how much they will pay for your dental care per year (often around $1,500). If you anticipate needing significant work, such as dentures, crowns, or bridges, you may reach this limit quickly. We recommend choosing a plan with the highest annual maximum possible so that you can have adequate coverage for more extensive treatments.
Understand Plan Allowances When Going to an Out-Of-Network Dentist:
Most people assume a $1,500 annual limit means the insurance pays 100% of costs up to that amount. In reality, dental insurance pays based on their “allowance.” For example, if a dental service costs $100 but the insurance allowance is $85, they will pay the $85 and you will be responsible for the $15 difference. Look for plans with the highest allowances to minimize your out-of-pocket costs.
Research Specific Plans:
While we generally find MetLife, Guardian, Aetna, Cigna, and SunLife easier to work with and they deny the least, the specific plan you choose is more important than the company. Most providers offer several tiers of coverage. Please research each option to ensure it meets your specific dental needs. This list is just a starting point, and other dental insurance companies may also offer great fits as well.
We cannot guarantee the specific coverage of any plan, but we are here to help! If you have questions, our dedicated front office team—Traci and Heather—are always happy to assist you with any questions you may have.
