In this new year, we would like to introduce you to a natural toothpaste that just might be right for you–Dr. Jen’s toothpaste. Below, we have summarized information from Dr. Jen’s website to help you understand the history behind her toothpaste, what makes it effective, her fluoride and non-fluoride versions, and how to effectively use it.
History of Nano-Hydroxyapatite:
Dr. Jen’s toothpaste contains Nano-Hydroxyapatite (nHAp). This was first discovered in the late 1970’s when NASA scientists sought a cure for astronauts who experienced bone and tooth enamel loss after returning from zero gravity environments. Their treatment included introducing nHAp into toothpaste. It was so effective that a Japanese toothpaste company, Sangi, purchased the patent from NASA in 1980 for their toothpaste. Dr. Jen was previously an engineer before becoming a dentist, and she worked with chemists to make a toothpaste that uses nHAp along with natural ingredients.
What is Nano-Hydroxyapatite?
Nano-Hydroxyapatite (nHAp) is a naturally occurring mineral found in eggshells that makes up 97% of tooth enamel. It enters the pores of tooth enamel and exposed dentin, and restores and remineralizes them.
10% Nano-Hydroxyapatite:
According to Dr. Jen, a 10% concentration of nHAp provides multiple benefits.
Cleaner, Healthier Teeth:
She claims that this 10% concentration provides the same level of cavity protection as fluoride, and with a particle size small enough to enter pores and effectively remineralize and strengthen tooth enamel. She adds that her toothpaste also adheres to plaque, making it easier to remove plaque and food from teeth.
Protection Against Sensitivity:
Dr. Jen also says that nHAp fills the pores of exposed dentin and other weak surfaces of the enamel, which protects teeth from sensitivity.
Teeth-Whitening Properties:
Lastly, Dr. Jen claims that nHAp fills pores and micro lesions in the enamel. She says this has the effect of creating a smoother and whiter tooth surface.
Fluoride-Free and Fluoride Versions:
Dr. Jen has created two different types of toothpastes—Fluoride-Free Toothpaste and SP Triple Protection. Below is a brief description of each one.
Fluoride-Free Toothpaste:
Dr. Jen’s Fluoride-Free Toothpaste contains 10% eggshell nano-hydroxyapatite (nHAp). She explains that eggshells also contain zinc and magnesium, which are key nutrients for healthy teeth. Xylitol is another ingredient in this toothpaste that possesses anti-microbial properties. Lastly, this toothpaste is non-foaming.
SP (Triple Protection) Toothpaste:
Dr. Jen’s SP, Triple Protection Toothpaste contains 10% nHAp, fluoride, and xylitol. She claims it fights decay, has a pleasant taste, freshens breath, and whitens teeth. It is both vegan and gluten free as well.
Natural Flavors:
Dr. Jen uses a blend of essential oils to flavor her toothpaste. She says that her cool mint toothpaste kills bad breath bacteria and promotes a healthy mouth microbiome. It includes peppermint oil, spearmint oil, black cherry extract, papaya extract, licorice root extract, stevia leaf extract, and monk fruit extract. Her strawberry toothpaste contains natural strawberry flavoring and calendula extract.
Directions:
Dr. Jen’s toothpaste is meant to be used by brushing 2 times a day with a pea size amount. She instructs to spit out excess toothpaste, not to rinse after brushing, and then to wait 30 minutes before consuming food or beverages for the maximum mineral uptake. For her fluoride version, and for children under 6, she says to minimize swallowing. She also recommends consulting the dentist for children under 2.
We were impressed with what we researched about Dr. Jen’s toothpaste, and now we sell the fluoride and fluoride-free versions at Boulevard Dental for $25. There are many toothpaste options out there, but talk to Dr. Medianick about whether he feels Dr. Jen’s toothpaste may be a good option for you!
