Nitrous Oxide Gas

What is Nitrous Oxide Gas?

Nitrous Oxide Gas (N2O gas, sometimes called “laughing gas”) is a safe and effective sedative agent that is inhaled through a mask over the nose. It does not induce sleep, but allows an individual to hear and respond to others during a dental procedure.

Why is Nitrous Oxide Gas Used?

Nitrous oxide allows a patient to feel calm and comfortable during dental procedures. It can be used during any procedure. Your dentist will help you decide if nitrous oxide is a good option for you.

The Procedure:

  1. The dentist will ask you to breath normally through your nose.
  2. It will take a few minutes to start feeling the effects of the nitrous oxide.
  3. A feeling of calm/comfort will ensue. Some people may also feel light-headed or a sensation of tingling/heaviness in their arms and legs.
  4. The effects soon will wear off after the mask is removed.
